Visiting Birdie

Spring is close.  This bird was pecking around in my garden.  Any ideas what it might be?  I haven’t figured it out myself.  For perspective, it’s about as bit as a pigeon.  I’ve included a close-up of his markings.  I managed to convince E that it is NOT a hummingbird.  She was just certain it was.  At least she tried to identify it using her photo guides.  She gets an A for effort, if not for accuracy.
