Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Part 4 - Jalapeño

In yet another tank at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, there was a 1-year-old loggerhead turtle, named Jalapeño.  He was about a foot long, but will eventually grow to be 200-300 pounds! Jalapeño was a social turtle. In talking with staff, it seems the little turtle has learned to associate humans with food. Since interacting with humans results in feeding, at least daily, then he chooses to socialize in order to get food. Pavlov, anyone?

He hangs out underneath the mangrove roots as a form of protection.  Unlike land turtles, sea turtles cannot retract their heads into their shells for protection.  So, when they aren't out and about, they like to park underneath something that provides protection for their heads.

E really wanted to touch him.  That's against the rules, so she talked to him..a lot.  Whole conversations.  She even took a few videos of him.

We visited with Jalapeño all three days.  Since we've been home, she has continued to talk about the little guy and can't wait for an opportunity to go back and see him again.
